The next day, then-Commissioner Ronda Storms warned him not to skip the regular application process for that money. During this period, nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen at Noreast Lake reached record levels, producing a purple ooze that coated the lake's surface.
That was for East Lake, a 100-acre lake with one of the highest concentrations of nutrients, which can choke a lake's oxygen supply. Some residents blamed the flood project for the conditions. Activists have vowed to target his campaign as payback for the wetlands vote. In Pinellas, land deal with Property Appraiser Jim Smith raises questions. Part of his troubles, he pointed out, can be traced to the state's open meetings laws. He said this likely contributed to lake conditions, but only temporarily. As a public official, though, that brash behavior has invited criticism. If they weren't happy with him, he wondered, 'Why would they have elected me in the first place? That's what I advertised. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
Environmentalists consider him the ringleader of a failed move to disband local wetlands oversight.
